Perperúna Ensemble
The female vocal ensemble Perperúna emerged from open singing circles in the parks of Berlin during Summer 2019 and was officially founded in early 2020. Since then, the members of Perperúna, driven together by their common passion for Greek, Balkan and Sephardi oral traditions, focus on the study, reinterpretation and communication of the female polyphonic sound, often with the use of performative elements. They explore the symbols, languages and dialects, myths and tales, melody and structure of songs that have been accompanying many generations in the celebration of life and the praising of nature, in the expression of love, in the working-field, in migration, in the time of war, in the mourning of death.
On a spring day in 2023 I had the pleasure to photograph the talented ensemble in a beautiful garden in Berlin.
Perperúna is comprised by:
Lorena Atrakzy (Israel/Palestine), Dimitra Kandia (Greece), Klairi Kountouri (Greece), Angel Monaco (Italy), Saraï O'gara (Spain), Johanna Schlottke (Germany).
